Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register to compete?

If you would like to register for a Premier BJJ event, please visit the registration page, and enter your details. Be sure to check with your coaches and/or teammates what club name you should enter.

How old do kids have to be to compete?

All kids born on 2002 or after are eligible to fight in the Kids Division. For those born on 2000 and 2001, then you register as juvenile. All kids will be matched up per belt, age, weight and gender. For further information on the belt and age system please check the IBJJF graduation system here. The application form must be completed and signed by a parent or legal guardian. For any other queries on the kids division, please email us to info@premierbjjchampionships with the subject ‘Kids Division’.

Can I wear a gi with patches on?

Patches may only be affixed in authorised regions of the gi, as depicted in the IBJJF Rules Book. They should be of cotton fabric and properly seamed.

All patches unseamed or in unauthorised regions of the gi will be removed by the gi inspectors.

My gi has painted patches on – Is this allowed?

Painted gis are forbidden, unless the paint is designed in the form of an academy or sponsor logo – and only on regions of the gi where patches are permitted.

Even in cases where they are permitted, the athlete will be obliged to change gis should the paint mark the gi of the opponent.

Can I wear any gi I like when competing?

We comply by the guidelines set by the IBJJF for competitions.

Athletes may only wear white, royal blue or black gis. Gis with tops and pants of different colors are not permitted; nor are gis with a collar that is a different color than the rest of the top.

There are no other competitors in my weight class/age division. Can I have a refund?

If you are the only competitor in your weight class or age division, you qualify for a refund from the event organisers. This must be negotiated with – and agreed – with the event organisers.

I have registered, but am now injured and unable to compete. Can I have a refund?

Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds to competitors for our events.

By paying for the registration you will be put into a bracket and be called to compete on the day of competition. You will lose your first match by disqualification if you do not show up for your match, do not make the minimum qualification for that bracket, or have an injury or other medical condition that will not allow you to compete.

What happens if I do not make weight?

As weigh-ins take place on the day of competition, if you do not make weight first time you will be disqualified from the tournament.

Please note that there are no second weigh-ins.

Do I weigh-in with my gi on?

If you are competing in a gi tournament, you must weigh in with the gi on. You should look to weight less than the amount stipulated for your weight class without the gi on, to allow for this extra weight.

How much do I have to weigh?

Competitors are organised into weight classes, and must weigh less than the amount stipulated whilst wearing the gi.

Please see the weight classes page to see a full list of the classes available.

When does the weigh-in take place?

The weigh-ins system used at Premier BJJ events is similar to that used in the IBJJF Mundials; Weigh-ins are on the day of competition.

The athlete will have their weight checked after the official call for his first fight, minutes before stepping on the mat.

How much does it cost to register?

The registration fee depends on the size of the event, the number of competitor places available, and the size of the venue being used. The registration fee is usually announced at the same time as the event, and is commonly priced at around £30-40 (for adults).

Are Premier BJJ events free for spectators?

Yes, all of our events are open for spectators, and admission is free.
